He formerly held the title of Senior Music Editor at Rolling Stone, where his own work also regularly appeared. He has also held senior editorial roles at The Messenger and Time Out New York.

In 2011, Hank published a book about the band Ween for the 33 1/3 imprint. That same year, he launched Heavy Metal Bebop, an interview series dealing with the connections between jazz and heavy metal; the series relaunched as a podcast in 2019. In 2015, he produced a limited-edition vinyl box set reissuing the early work of the Cleveland post-hardcore band craw. For more than a decade, Hank blogged about music and other topics at the now semi-dormant Dark Forces Swing Blind Punches. He has also written liner notes for a variety of releases.

Hank has performed, recorded and toured with bands including STATS, Skryptor and Aa. In 2021, he released an album of solo music under the name Lake Geode. He lives in New York.
